Growing Teff in Somaliland

Teff grows well in arid regions like many of Somaliland. It is a good substitute for wheat, is gluten free and high In protein. Teff also has small seeds meaning a small amount will be able to cover a huge area.


The Government of Somaliland should sponsor farmers to grow this useful crop and use it as a staple in our foods.


Benefits

  • Teff is a good substitute for the water hungry wheat

  • Teff are grown mainly in mountain regions which Somaliland is plentiful in

  • It has a long shelf life and can be stored in granaries in case of droughts

  • Germinates very quickly and is ready for early boot stage harvest around 50 days of seeding

  • It has a tolerance to drought conditions which unfortunately plague Somaliland
