The Halgan Land Fund

Phase 1 is where we set up the HLF, as a collective land fund to avoid inequalities among land distribution. We will also raise money using the traditional Somali system of mag, where all male members of a clan pledge to pay a certain amount of money to a certain cause.

Government run lands in Somaliland will be transferred to the HLF's guardianship and we will maintain this land in our responsibility with a Tree planting campaign.

In our pilot project, we purchase land in Naivasha and redistribute it among the already local, Isahakia community. We will develop it as a collective farmlands or the Somali answer to the Kibbutz. Unlike the Kibbutz, we will not encourage segregation between the farmers and the natives to the land but allow the indigenous people to have a 30% stake in our project.

Phase 2 is where we expand this model to other regions such as, Nakuru, Arusha, Hawassa, Bahir dar, Hararghe, Bale etc. We would diversify our produce into other sectors such as Animal husbandry, fishing, textiles and more.

We would start building houses on the purchased lands and invite people from Somaliland to settle. Particularly, we set aside 30% of all houses built for the indigenous residents of our settlements.

The produce from Halgan farms, will be first distributed among the residents and the surplus sold at a fair price in Hargeisa markets.

Also we would grow different crops depending on the location of the Jama'a. For example in our Kenyan branches, the crop grown will be Tea plants and in our Ethiopian branches, coffee and Teff.

A portion of the land will be set aside for the Jama'a members for private use, where they can farm for themselves and rear chickens.

This idea will help the spread of ideas and bring several communities closer together.
